I gave my profile address to a friend. Several hours later (after having played around a bit more with Cwtch and then going on to other apps, with Cwtch running in the background), they sent me a message. I tapped on the "new message" notification, and it took me to the main Cwtch screen and displayed the "Shutdown Cwtch?" modal, instead of taking me to the new message.

I was still able to navigate to the message from my friend, and I joined the group. I received some messages in that group, then went to another app, and while there received another group message. I tapped on the "new message" notification, and this time it took me to the group's screen (maybe that's the last Cwtch screen I was on?), but again showed the "Shutdown Cwtch?" modal.
